It seems as though InMotion ticks all of the boxes. The overall goodwill available online was pretty impressive and there were definitely some recurring themes amongst this feedback.

InMotion was competitive in pricing, uptime, usability and most of the usual criteria for web host. Where it was most impressive was in terms of customer service and tech support. The reviews were overwhelmingly positive across the board in these categories. When you think about it, any one can provide a server for you to host a site (even at no cost) but what you are really paying for is security, and customer service for when you need it.

To assign an IP address to a website or hosting account in WHM is very easy and takes only a few steps. First go to the “Account functions” menu and choose “Change Site’s IP address”.

Here you will see a list of your existing accounts. Select an account using the domains and users in the list. Alternatively, you can use the account search functions if you have a lot of accounts on your server. Once you selected the account, click the “Change” button at the bottom of the page. Choose the new IP address from the drop down menu and click “Change”. Your site may appear to be down for a while until the change has propagated across the internet.

It is also possible to change the IP address from the “List accounts” option from the menu. If you hover your mouse over the accounts row on the IP column and ‘Edit’ button will appear. By clicking on it, you will go to the same page where you previously changed the IP address.

In order to install cPanel you will need access to a dedicated server or a Virtual Private Server (VPS). Make sure the server meets cPanel’s system requirements:

cPanel can only be installed on servers that have freshly installed operating system. Make sure there are no other softwares installed on the server such as FTP, web server etc. cPanel will have these features anyway.

In order to install cPanel you must have a valid license for your server’s main IP address. You can purchase cPanel license from your web host or directly from the official cPanel site.

Installing cPanel on your server

You will need root SSH access to the server. If you are connecting from a windows computer, use PuTTY (SSH client) to access your server. Log in as a root user and follow these steps:

1. Type the following command cd /home and press enter. You have entered the /home directory.
2. In order to download the latest version of cPanel type the following command: wget http://layer1.cpanel.net/latest and press enter.
3. To start the installation process, type: sh latest and press enter. You will see some output and a warning that cPanel requires a fresh server for the installation. The installer will overwrite existing configurations!
4. Depending on your server, the installation can take up to 70 minutes, so you might wanna grab a beer.
5. Once the installer finishes installing cPanel, you will be required to run some post-installation tasks.

Installing cPanel: Post-installation tasks

Make sure your license information is up to date by typing the following command: /usr/local/cpanel/cpkeyclt and press enter. You should receive the following message: “Updating Internal cPanel Information” – You have installed cPanel, and you should now be able to log in to WHM.

To log in to WHM, open your browser. You can access WHM by http:// or https:// followed by your hostname or IP address and with a port number, usually 2086 for standard http, or 2087 for the secure https. e.g.: http://your-server-ip-address.com:2086

When you first log in to WHM, you will see the initial setup screen.

Read the license agreement and scroll down to the bottom of the page and click the agree button. Fill in the contact information, make sure that the server’s hostname is correct. You will also need to make sure that you provide at least two valid DNS resolvers. If you are using incorrect resolvers, it may degrade the performance of your server. If you are unsure, contact your hosting provider and ask them which IP adresses you should use. At the last box the correct ethernet device should be selected already. You can select a different on from the drop down menu. click the button to move on to step 3.

On the next screen you can set up new IP addresses if you like. You can do this later.

On the next page you can set up nameservers that are responsible for maintaining a list of your domain names and their corresponding IP addresses. Choose which namserver program you would like to use on your server (in most cases it is BIND).

In order to set up namservers, you will need an IP address for each one. You will also need to choose a hostname for them and specify them both at your domain’s registrar. Make sure that you create hosts for the nameservers rather than just regular subdomains. Enter your namserver’s hostnames.

At the “Add A Entries for Nameservers & Hostnames” section verify that all of the IP addresses listed there are correct, then click each checkbox to add “A Entries” for all nameservers and the hostname. Save, and go to step 5.

On the next page, you will find the default services listed. You can change thise services as you see fit. Go to the next step.

On the final page, you can set up disk quotas to keep track of hard drive usage, and to enforce the space limits you give each account. It is recommended to leave this setting on. Click the finish button. You have finished the initial set up. Don’t forget that anything you entered previously can be changed at any time.

If you notice an “Hostname A Entry is missing” pop up window, this probably indicates a problem with the nameserver. You may need to re-check and verify those settings again.

First, you need to log in to your WHM control panel. Click the “Packages” icon on your main WHM screen, then click the “Add packages” link. Here you will be able to set up the new account package.

Most hosting companies provide one-click-install scripts so the customer can have a website up and running with a push of a button. This is again a basic feature at most web hosting companies.

Do they provide good customer service and support?

A good hosting provider offers around the clock support and/or live chat for their customers. Do not trust those companies that don’t offer at least on of those.

Do they provide good uptime?

A good uptime is a must. You expect that your website is online all the time. Although there are ocassional maintenance at every company, a good one should guarantee you a 99.9% uptime.

Do they give you enough diskspace, features, bandwidth and control over web hosting account?

As your site will grow, it is important to have enough diskspace for your content. Bandwidth or data transfer is also important to have enough. If you have a limit on your monthly bandwidth, your site can get disabled if you pass this limit. Most companies with shared hosting plans will offer unlimited bandwidth. You will have to careful with that, and don’t go for it unless it is a trusted hosting provider. Hostgator, for example has a very good reputation.

How you can control your hosting account is also important. Good providers should offer cPanel or Plesk for easy administration.

The number of subdomains, addon domains, databases, FTP and email accounts you can add to your site is also important.
